Multi-Timeframe Analysis of IB: Aligning Intraday Setups with Higher-Timeframe Trends
From TradingHabits, the trading encyclopedia · 14 min read · February 28, 2026
Setup Description
This strategy enhances the reliability of Initial Balance (IB) setups by aligning them with the dominant trend on higher timeframes (daily and weekly charts). The core principle is to only take IB breakout trades in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend. This approach filters out lower-probability counter-trend trades and positions the trader to participate in the larger, more effective moves that are driving the market.
Entry Rules
- Higher-Timeframe Trend: Identify the trend on the daily and weekly charts using moving averages (e.g., 50-day and 200-day MAs).
- IB Breakout Alignment: Only take long IB breakouts when the higher-timeframe trend is up, and short IB breakouts when the higher-timeframe trend is down.
- Entry: Enter on a pullback to the IB breakout level, with confirmation from a momentum oscillator like the RSI or MACD.
Exit Rules
- Profit Target: Target a key resistance level on the daily chart for long trades, or a key support level for short trades.
- Stop Loss: Placed on the opposite side of the IB range.
Profit Target Placement
- Higher-Timeframe Levels: Use support and resistance levels from the daily and weekly charts as profit targets.
Stop Loss Placement
- Structure-Based: Place the stop loss below the IB low for a long trade, or above the IB high for a short trade.
Risk Control
- Max Risk Per Trade: 1% of trading capital.
- Trade Selection: Be highly selective and only take trades with clear alignment across multiple timeframes.
Money Management
- Position Sizing: Based on the 1% risk rule.
Edge Definition
The edge is derived from the principle of trading with the dominant trend. By aligning intraday setups with the higher-timeframe trend, traders can significantly increase their win rate and capture larger profits. The expected win rate for this strategy is in the 65-70% range, with a profit factor of 1.9 or higher.
