The Next Trade After A Loss Costs More Than Any Trade All Day. Most Traders Take It With No Rule Deciding Whether They're Allowed To
"I'll just get it back on the next one" is not a plan. It's the exact decision a trader who just took a loss is least equipped to make well.
You'll get a mandatory cooldown formula built from your own numbers, a base number of minutes per loss and how many losses you've taken today, so the clock is a figure you agreed to before the loss happened, not a feeling you negotiate with in the moment it hurts most.
You'll get the three-question clearance checklist that has to pass before the next trade counts as a plan instead of a reaction: size back to your written plan, the setup meets your full entry criteria on its own, and the cooldown clock has actually finished, not just felt long enough.
You'll get the re-entry size ladder, a fixed percentage step-down in position size for the first trade back after a loss, and a steeper one after two or more losses in the same session, so the size of your comeback trade is decided by the losses that came before it, not by how badly you want to make them back.
You'll get the same math running live in your browser twice: a one-screen clearance calculator on this page, and a full re-entry log on your download page that timestamps every loss, counts your cooldown down live, and tracks your streak until a win resets it.
This card won't tell you which setups to take.
It isn't trying to.
What it does is take the single worst-timed decision in trading, when to get back in after a loss, and turn it into a clock and a checklist you set before the loss happened, so the call isn't made by whoever you are sixty seconds after your stop got hit.

What's Inside
What's Inside The Re-Entry Protocol Card
- 01What a re-entry rule actually is: a cooldown period and a checklist set before a loss happens, not a feeling you check in on after one.
- 02The cooldown formula: Required Cooldown (minutes) = Base Cooldown Per Loss × Consecutive Losses, capped at a maximum you set, so one loss costs a short wait and three in a row cost a long one.
- 03The three-question clearance checklist: size back to plan, setup meets full entry criteria on its own, cooldown clock finished. All three, every time, or the trade doesn't count as planned.
- 04The re-entry size ladder: a fixed percentage step-down in position size for your first trade back after a loss, and a steeper one after two or more losses in the same session.
- 05Two fully worked sessions side by side: a trader who waits out the clock and re-enters at reduced size, and the same trader's numbers if they'd skipped the wait entirely.
- 06Three ways traders talk themselves past their own cooldown clock without ever admitting that's what's happening, and the specific step each one skips.
- 07A blank worksheet for your own base cooldown and step-down percentages, plus a loss log grid for recording what the clock actually said versus what you did.
- 08Two live versions of the same math online: a quick clearance calculator on this page, a fuller re-entry log with a live countdown on your download page.

Behind The Tool
Where A Clock Beats A Feeling
Why A Fixed Cooldown Beats "I'll Know When I'm Ready"
The moment right after a loss is the single worst moment to judge whether you're ready to trade again, because the person doing the judging is the same person who just took the loss. A cooldown that's set before the session starts, a base number of minutes multiplied by how many losses you've stacked up, removes that judgment call entirely. It doesn't ask whether you feel ready. It only asks what time it is.
Scaling the cooldown to consecutive losses instead of using one flat number for every loss matters too: a single loss inside a system with normal variance shouldn't cost the same wait as a third loss in a row, which is a much stronger signal that something about the session itself, not just the setup, has gone wrong.
Why Size Should Step Down, Not Reset To Zero
A cooldown that ends with full size back on the table the instant the clock hits zero still leaves the first trade back exposed to the same pressure that caused the loss in the first place. A size step-down closes that gap without banning the trade outright: the first re-entry after a loss goes on at reduced size, and a second consecutive loss steps it down further, so the position sizing itself absorbs some of the risk that the cooldown clock alone can't.
A win resets the streak count back to zero, so the ladder only ever applies to a genuine losing stretch, not to a trader's entire session regardless of how it's actually going.

Recommended Re-Entry Size

Required Cooldown = Base Cooldown Per Loss × Consecutive Losses, capped at 120 minutes. Minutes Remaining = Required Cooldown minus Minutes Since Last Loss, floored at zero. Recommended Re-Entry Size = 100% minus (Step-Down % × (Consecutive Losses − 1)), floored at 25%. The full re-entry log on your download page runs this same math live off an actual logged timestamp instead of a number you type in by hand.
Mechanics only. Nothing on this page or in the card is a live quote, a specific broker's or prop firm's own rulebook, or a recommendation of any particular cooldown length or size percentage for your own account.
Common Questions
Where do the default minutes and percentages in the calculator come from?
They're placeholder starting values you can change to your own numbers instantly. Nothing about them is a recommendation of what your own cooldown length or step-down percentage should be, that's a decision the card walks through but doesn't make for you.
Does Consecutive Losses reset after a win?
Yes. The streak count is trailing losses since your last win, not a running tally for the whole session. A win brings it back to zero, so the cooldown and size-ladder math only ever apply to a genuine losing stretch, not to a session that's actually going fine.
Is this the same as a prop firm's cooldown or consistency rule?
The underlying idea is related, but this card is built for your own personal re-entry decisions, not a specific firm's evaluation rulebook. If you're trading a funded or evaluation account, use your firm's own stated rules, not this card's default numbers, as the ones that actually govern your account.
