What is backtest overfitting?

Overfitting happens when a strategy's rules are tuned so closely to a specific stretch of history that they capture noise from that period instead of a repeatable market behavior, so performance often degrades once the strategy is traded live.

Is my backtested strategy curve-fit, or does it actually have an edge?

Q: Is my backtested strategy curve-fit, or does it actually have an edge?

Check 6 commonly cited overfitting warning signs covering the number of tuned inputs, whether variations were cherry-picked, out-of-sample testing, profit concentration, rule simplicity, and testing across different symbols or periods. More checked statements mean more overfitting risk.

How this is calculated

Each checked statement is a commonly cited sign that a backtest was fit to its own history rather than capturing a durable market behavior. More checked statements mean more reason for caution.
Overfitting happens when a strategy's rules get tuned so closely to a specific stretch of history that they stop working once that particular pattern moves on. It is one of the most common ways a strong-looking backtest turns into a mediocre or losing strategy once traded live.
The strongest protection against overfitting is testing the strategy on data it was never tuned against, whether that's a different time period, a different symbol, or simply forward, unseen trading with small size.
This is a self-check based on commonly cited overfitting warning signs, not a statistical test of your specific backtest.
