How is this calculated?

Each of the 6 statements is a red flag for exercising being the costlier choice. A score of 5 or 6 recommends selling to close, 2 to 4 recommends comparing the numbers first, and 0 to 1 suggests exercising may be the right call.

Should I exercise this option myself, or just sell it to close the position?

Q: Should I exercise this option myself, or just sell it to close the position?

A 6-item checklist that scores whether exercising an option is likely to cost more than selling it to close, and recommends selling to close, comparing the numbers, or exercising.

Discipline isn't a personality trait. It's a system you build so willpower is optional.

Check What's True Right Now

Check every statement that's true for this specific option, right now, before you decide.

This option still has meaningful extrinsic (time) value left, exercising would throw that value away instead of capturing it by selling.
I don't actually need or want to hold the underlying shares, or be short the underlying shares, after this position closes.
Exercising would tie up meaningfully more capital than I want committed to this position.
I haven't checked what exercising costs in commissions or fees compared to simply selling to close.
I'm leaning toward exercising mainly out of habit, or because I'm not sure how to close the position, not for a specific reason.
I haven't confirmed the exact cutoff time my broker needs an exercise or sell order by today.

How this is calculated

Exercising an option converts it into a stock position at the strike price. If the option still has extrinsic value, exercising forfeits that extrinsic value, while selling to close captures both the intrinsic and extrinsic value in one transaction.
Exercising also requires the full capital to buy (or the shares to deliver for) 100 shares per contract, which is usually far more capital than the option itself cost.
There are legitimate reasons to exercise, mainly when you specifically want the shares, or when the option has no extrinsic value left and exercising is the more direct route. This checklist flags when exercising might be a costly default instead of a deliberate choice.
If several items are checked, comparing the actual numbers, extrinsic value left versus fees and capital tied up, before deciding is worth the extra minute.
