What's the biggest risk of rolling a futures contract instead of closing it?

Rolling to avoid realizing a loss, rather than because your plan calls for continued exposure, turns a planned trade decision into an emotional one. Thin liquidity in the next contract month and physical delivery terms on some contracts are the other two factors this checklist specifically screens for.

Each statement checked leans toward closing instead of rolling. More checks mean a stronger case for closing.

I want this exposure for a specific, temporary reason that will have passed before the next contract expires.
Open interest and volume are already noticeably thinner in the next contract month than I'd want to trade.
I haven't checked the price difference, the roll spread, between this contract and the next one.
This position is losing, and I'd only be rolling it to avoid taking the loss right now.
I don't have a specific new stop-loss and target planned for the position in the next contract month.
Holding through expiration risks physical delivery on this contract, and I am not set up to take or make delivery.
My original reason for being in this trade has already changed since I opened it.
I'm rolling out of habit, or to stay in the trade, not because my original plan called for staying in past this expiration.

How this is calculated

Rolling a futures contract means closing the expiring contract and opening a new position in a later expiration month to keep the same market exposure. Closing simply ends the exposure.
Thin open interest and volume in the next contract month can mean wider spreads and worse fills on the roll itself, separate from anything about your original trade thesis.
Rolling to avoid realizing a loss, rather than because your plan called for continued exposure, converts a trade decision into an emotional one.
Physical delivery risk applies to deliverable futures contracts. Cash-settled contracts don't carry this risk, but check your specific contract's settlement type before assuming either way.
